All insurance plans are required by law in the US to provide breastfeeding support and supplies.
This includes support before you give birth (prenatal breastfeeding education and care) and after you give birth, regardless of your preferred birthing environment (hospital stay, birthing center, or home birth care). Breastfeeding supplies include things like breast pumps and accessories. Insurance will often fully cover your consultation fees for home visits, clinic, and Telehealth appointments. In practice, not all insurance companies meet these requirements. They may limit or deny lactation codes. You can appeal a denial.
If your plan does not provide in-network options, you have the right to seek services from an out-of-network provider.
Make the most of your health insurance. Call your company and ask about your benefits. For more information on your rights as a breastfeeding mom, visit nwlc.org/breastfeeding.
